New South Wales, Australia, has been severely affected over the past few days due to intense storms and heavy rainfall. A rapidly intensifying weather system, known as a “Bomb Cyclone,” has brought over 200 mm of rain to Sydney and surrounding areas. As a result, the Warragamba Dam reached its full capacity and began to spill automatically.
According to WaterNSW, the volume of water released from the dam peaked at around 60 gigalitres (GL) per day. This caused rising water levels in rivers like the Nepean and Hawkesbury. However, officials have assured that the situation remains under control, and no major flood threat is currently expected.
Meanwhile, coastal areas have been battered by waves measuring between 6 to 8 meters, leading to widespread beach erosion. Authorities have warned the public to avoid beaches and areas affected by floods and power outages. Tens of thousands of homes have lost electricity, many flights have been cancelled, and public transportation has been disrupted.
Emergency services and government officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely. The public is strongly advised to follow official warnings and stay safe.
